What is the SOActive Program?
In order to make SO programs more accessible and to increase participation numbers of school-aged children, SOS is proposing a partnership between Saskatchewan schools in which the school, students, and SOS can reap the benefits. The program strives to provide students with an intellectual disability the opportunity to become physically active and to participate in quality athletic and sport experiences while at school (during extracurricular hours or physical education classes). First and foremost, Special Olympics Saskatchewan wants the Special Olympics SOActive Program to fit into your school's existing programs. Schools have the freedom to develop whatever part(s) of the SOActive program that work for your school.
To Participate in the SOActive Program, the following steps need to be followed:
- Assign teacher(s) as main organizers of the program
- Identify students within the school who would like to participate
- Pick sport(s) or athletic skills that your club(s) would like to focus on – e.g. track & field or basic motor skills
- Decide whether this club will be an extracurricular activity or if it will take place during the allotted gym time during the week
- Fill out appropriate registration forms and send them to Special Olympics Saskatchewan
Registration forms and SOActive Tool Kit available by contacting Stefanie Vogt.
