Youth Programming
Active Start Program (Youth age 2-6)
The Special Olympics Active Start Program is the first of its kind in the Province. The program provides specific training and educational opportunities for children with an intellectual disability and their families. Active Start is built on the rationale that, when children with an intellectual disability receive early instruction in basic motor skills and developmentally appropriate play, there is an excellent opportunity for improvement in their physical, social, and cognitive abilities.
The Active Start Program runs as a 12-week program in which the individual, accompanied by their parent or caregiver, will learn basic motor/movement skills to prepare them for more complex movement skills. Sessions will be from September – December and February – April. Please contact the Youth Development Coordinator for more information or to sign up!
FUNdamentals Program (Youth age 6-9)
The Special Olympics FUNdamentals Program provides specific training and educational opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities, many of whom do not have any other avenues for structured physical fitness. The FUNdamentals program is designed as a continuation for those participants that have graduated from the Active Start program and are looking to develop more specific sport related skills that will contribute to sport participation in the future.
The FUNdamentals program runs as a 12-week program. It will run from September – December and February – April. Please contact the Youth Development Coordinator for more information or to sign up!
